The Economist names Uzbekistan ‘country of the year’

The Economist names Uzbekistan as the most improved country in its annual ‘country of the year’ awards. In a world in which the magazine characterises as defined by belligerent nationalism, ‘no other country travelled as far’ as Uzbekistan in 2019.

The Economist praised Mirziyoyev’s government for the reduction in red tape and unwarranted visits to private businesses by government officials, in addition to the invitations for Uzbek and foreign technocrats to assist the government in its reforms. It also highlighted the improved relations with its neighbours, including the opening up of borders and easing of visa restrictions, as well as improved access for international journalists and reductions in forced labour.
